KAB SOUVENIR GTX

Archival Audio Interface With GrooveTuner™

KAB SOUVENIR GTX ANALOG INTERFACE WITH GROOVE TUNER
Brand new for 2003, the KAB Souvenir GTX offers advanced flexibility for processing recorded media. All your analog audio signals should pass through the GTX on their way to digital conversion and especially at the back end for the ultimate in mono mixing. Independent outputs also permit the creation of 4 channel mixes from stereo sources.

If time and experience has taught us anything, it is that our precious record grooves are far from perfect.

  • Disc cutters are not perfect
  • The molding process, though impressive, is not perfect
  • The artifacts of groove wear are inconsistent from side to side
  • The playback stylus and cartridge are not perfect

The monophonic record groove begins life as a single groove, modulated laterally, or side to side. There are also vertically cut mono recordings where the groove modulation is cut in a hill and dale motion. These are less prevalent.

When you play back a mono recording using a stereo cartridge and listen in stereo you can hear all these variables present themselves in the soundstage.
- Left signal and noise
- Right signal and noise
- Left + Right signal and noise
- Left – Right surface noise
- Right – Left surface noise
Usually the first step towards improving the sound is to simply combine the left and right channels with a mono selector or mono cartridge. This goes a long way in reducing surface noise by cancelling the Right - Left and Left - Right signals. But because the quantities are not perfectly equal, then neither are the cancellations.

We can use the attributes of the stereo cartridge to our advantage by first dissecting all these different signals. Then we can pit them against each other in a way that produces the most optimum cancellation of noise and distortion. And we call this process Groove Tuning™

The Inverse RIAA equalizer can be used to convert your phono signal to a flat eq or keep the RIAA bass boost and just flatten the treble portion. Restoration professionals prefer this EQ for it enhances noise reduction processing.

In a stereo recording, the stereo blend control can be used to tighten the soundstage. The independent outputs can be used to dissect the individual signals for 4 channel surround sound:
  • Left
  • Right
  • Lateral I.E. Mono for center channel
  • Vertical I.E. Ambience for rear channel

Isolate vocals or instrumental solos in stereo recordings. Can also be used to suppress vocals in many stereo recordings.

Connections are single ended RCA and active balanced TRS style connectors. Bypass is hardwired.
Dimensions are 16.73 x 5.5 x 1.72". Optional Rack Ends are available from Lansing Co.

All the circuitry in the GTX is carefully designed to preserve the highest fidelity.

Power up preconditioning effectively "burns in" the coupling components each time you turn the GTX on.

Dual voltage regulation plus EMI filtering effectively isolates the power supply for absolutely quiet hum free performance at any volume level.

All steel construction wards off the effects of stray magnetic fields.

The really great features to take note of with the GTX are, I believe, the high performance and flexibility. This is the first truly dedicated analog archival interface.

Signal mixing has been known to the archival restoration community for many years, What we have done with the GTX is to take all that knowledge and put it into a single easy to use box.

The Vector Mix control is new and most unusual. It has normally been assumed that there is no relationship between the vertical and lateral signals of a mono disc. KAB has found that there can be some noise cancelling with certain records by blending some of the vertical information back against the lateral.

The independent outputs will permit the dissecting of stereo recordings into 4 basic signals for re mixing into quasi 4 channel recordings for surround sound.
