KAB SX-1200

    While developing the PS-1200 outboard power supply, internal measurements showed a high frequency pulse noise interference being generated by the strobe lamp itself. Since the strobe lamp is only needed to set speed changes, it seemed like a wise idea to develop a strobe disabler.

The circuit installs quickly with only 3 wire connections. In use you simply hold the start-stop button down for 5 seconds and the lamp will disable. Hold again for 5 seconds and the lamp returns on. The lamp will self test at power on and then automatically extinguish after approx 7-10 seconds.

The elimination of this 100 mA noise pulse further improves the efficiency of the internal voltage regulator and may improve micro motor control by eliminating a source of noise contamination.

   Built for reliability, I chose a digital timing approach using reliable cmos integrated circuits. A CD4093 serves to buffer the input and provide a steady pulse generator. A CD4017 decade counter serves to divide and extend the action time. A CD4013 flip flop produces the alternate on-off-on action.

   In use, the CD4093 generates one pulse per second when triggered. The CD4017 is tapped at the #6 output and so indicates every 6 seconds triggering the CD4013 flip flop. This in turn gates a transistor switch which finally enables or disables the strobe lamp.
