TOP INFO HELP
  • Are poly lined sleeves really better than plain paper?
For LP's yes. Paper sleeves, with the exception of very expensive archival grade, shed and produce dust and specs. Surely you have seen white specs imbedded in the grooves? This is a nuisance to remove before each play and adds to surface noise. Poly lined sleeves avoid this problem at an economical cost.
  • Is the above true for 78's as well as LP's?
Things are alittle different here. 78's have an inherent surface sound that would probably mask over any light contamination in the groove. We believe paper sleeves are just fine for 78 recordings.
  • What about "rice paper" sleeves?
These are basically all poly with a thin sheet of rice paper sealed inside, presumably to absorb moisture. These were originally supplied with audiophile recordings and are nice sleeves. However, those recordings also had a thin cardboard insert for additional support. The rice paper sleeve itself offers no additional support for the record. We believe that the combination of heavy paper and poly lining offers better overall protection. A second benefit is you can read the label on both sides. Rice paper sleeves often hide the label on one or both sides.

FAQ TOP HELP
Record sleeves help protect our priceless records from dust and other airborne contamination. They also allow us to handle the records safely with out touching the groove surface.

Poly lined sleeves offer added protection from paper lint that can re deposit itself into the grooves. Everyone has seen the white spec on a record that caused a pop or even a skip.

A word about 78 RPM disc storage. These recordings are very fragile. Discs made before 1947 are under tremendous internal stress. If you doubt that, balance one on your finger and tap the edge. You should here a distinct ringing! Almost everyone knows the results of dropping one of these records. They shatter into many pieces. So, I don't recommend storing them in those old antique books. These books can put stress on the edge of the record near the spine of the book. It is true that if you are careful you can get away with using them, but is it really worth the risk? Keep them in storage boxes or separately on shelves and if possible always on edge. If you must stack them flat, I think a good limit is 10 records to the stack. 10" reel to reel boxes can store about 5 records.
